This is the house and lack of garden in November 1993. I'm one third of the way down the hill. That area of the house points Northwest. When we moved in, there was no garden at all, just #$$%$%^&#$ Bermuda grass.

Here it is today. Took this picture on June 25, 1996. The roses are still young and short. Most of them are own root old roses, so they will take a while to get big. Fairly soon, though, you will not be able to see the house from the driveway.

Front Porch and sidewalk, November 1993.

Front porch facing Northwest, June 25, 1996. The climbers going up the trellises are Alchemist & Sombruil on the corner, and Souvenir de Mme. Leonie Vienot & Climbing Pearle de Jardins near the door. All but Alchemist suffered severe winter damage this year. Other roses in the bed include Felicite Parmantier, Hebe's Lip, Village Maid, Cecile Brunner (which might be the climbing form, gotta move it), Vincent Godsif, Tabriz/Nichole, The Herbalist, Belle Story, and White Pet on the corner. More roses around the side ot the house. Yes, they are close together. I want one huge, inpenatrable hedge in a few years.

November 1993, facing Northwest. Plain, plain, plain.

June 25, 1996 -- driveway facing Southwest. Same area, different angle. Quite a difference, eh?
That's it for the before and afters. I could put up a bunch more, but it'd be more of the same. I'll add to these when I get some bloom going. Right now it's quiet, hot, and dry. Not many roses in bloom. Notice the red dirt? :)
